Improving function of the pancreas and decreasing diabetes risk using a plant-polyphenol, Rutin
Rutin is found in many foods including apple skins, grape skins, some berries, figs and also is a component of buckwheat (soba noodles). It is also commercially available at 500mg as a supplement in many Health Food stores.
What is the aim of the study?
The effect of longer term Rutin (500mg) intake, for 3 months, on blood markers of diabetes risk.
Who are we looking for?
You are eligible to come for a screen visit if you are:
- Male or Female
- Between 18 - 65 years of age
- Overweight with BMI (weight/height²) between 23 – 35 kg/m²
- Have family history of diabetes
- Not diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes
- Not diagnosed with any other medical conditions
What happens if you decide to participate?
You will need to be available for a screen visit of about 30 minutes to 1 hour which will take place at the Human Nutrition Unit (HNU), University of Auckland in Mt Eden.
If you are eligible after the screen visit, you will need to come for a total of 4 study visits (2 longer visits of 2.5hrs each, and 2 shorter visits of 15 mins each) over 3 months (come to one study visit every 4 weeks).
The 2 longer visits will take place as baseline (week 0), and week 12
The 2 shorter visits will take place at week 4 and week 8.
You will be given both yoghurt and capsules to consume daily for 3 months.

What will you receive for your participation?
You will receive $20 voucher after the completion of your screening visit for travel expenses.
You will also receive $50 voucher after the completion of each of the 4 study visits, plus $100 upon completion of the full study, as gratuity for your time and travel expenses.
You will also receive a full comprehensive report of your study results at the end of the study.
